The common coot inhabits the freshwater wetlands around Pune in great numbers. This bird is known as ‘warkari’ in Marathi due to the white patch on forehead which resembles the religious daub or ‘tila’ applied on the foreheads of this community. The Bhuleshwar temple is located between Solapur road and Saswad. An old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is located at a hilltop. Opening batsmen of the season had arrived. We saw the usual spotbills, coots, glossy ibis, painted storks, sandpipers, black winged stilts. The surprise item was the following bird - about the size between a bulbul and a sparrow; in the wooded part after the bridge. This hill in Pune, with arms spreading in different directions, is at its best in the monsoons. Visible and audible birdlife includes ducks like spotbills and dabchicks that serenely glide on the calm waters collected in the disused quarry, peacocks, painted partridge, common hawk cuckoo, iora, babblers, small minivets, white eyes and a variety of warblers.

There is a row of trees on the road outside the office building. Thick shady ones like the ‘rusty-shield-bearer’ which wears deep glossy green leaves and masses of yellow brown flowers in summer. Chinkara and blackbuck abound in this area. Quails can be sighted too. The most abundant bird here is the partridge (teetar). Partridges almost seem to fall out of trees.Vegetation is mostly the typical scrub hardy wiry trees like khair, babhul, with small leaves and thorns. Then there are the typical trees like kaal, khejri and ker.

Views from varandha ghat. Normally in the rainy season, this ghat is cloaked in mist and there are several waterfalls cascading down the surrounding mountains.These look awesome when viewed through binocs.You can easily get some chai and pakodas at the few stalls that line this portion of the ghat.
